Cityscape #21

A bright sunny day that turns quickly into a downpour.  Weather changes quickly in Chicago.  I  plan to do more of these cityscapes in the rain.

Wabash #3

This painting is part of another series called Wabash.  Named after Wabash Avenue here in Chicago.  The street has a unique look because of the elevated train tracks above that cast shadows on the street.

Reader #43

I used very somber colors for Reader #43.  I don't plan any color schemes before I begin.  Instead I premix about 6 colors each of the same value. Sometimes I mix colors as I apply the paint.  Or, maybe I will dip my brush into 2 different colors and then apply the paint on the surface.

Drug Store

About four or five years ago I was getting burned out of doing the figure.  I started doing a series on storefronts of small businesses in Chicago.  This painting was done just a few days ago but it was very similar to the images I did back then.

Coming and Going #49

Coming and Going #49 is a good example of painting the shapes between the figures to form a crowd scene.  Usually, when I see a cityscape painting with figures, the figures are painted last.  The figures are painted on top of a finished background.

Reader #42

Before I do a small painting a do a small black and white sketch of the design.  I map out the dark and lite shapes as you can see by the image below.  This sketch was only about 2 to 3 inches big. You can see how it translates to the color image.
