Cutting Machine

  Cutting Machine is part of a series of paintings depicting jobs of hard labor.  This machine is a coal cutting machine used to shave off layers of coal in an underground mine.  My intention is to use this subject matter as an inspiration for a painting rather than a literal, historical documentation.

  NYNY #21 is part of a series of works depicting the cityscapes of New York City.  These buildings are located around west 40th Street.  I found these structures on an early morning walk in the spring.  The color of the buildings and the design of the dark shapes is what caught my eye.

NYNY #20

  NYNY #20 is part of a series of paintings about New York City.  This scene was a cold morning in midtown as people were heading off to work.  This painting is divided into two halves.  The left side has a color contrast of red and blue but depth-wise very flat.  The figure on the right has  monochromatic colors with a three-dimensional feel.  I'm trying to create tension by contrasting both.

Clay Mining

  Clay Mining is part of a series of paintings to do with labor.  The figures in this painting are mining clay in West Virginia.  The clay is mostly used for mortar and bricks.  The design of this piece is much like a bow and arrow with tension being on the figure at the left.

  Reading #83 is a part of the series to do with the female figure reading.  This figure happens to be in a large park here in Chicago.  The busy background of the city is portrayed but not defined.  The opposites of a quite action, like reading, and a bustling city, contrast each other.

  Reading #82 is part of a series of works with the female figure in the act of reading.  I focus on the figure and it's relationship to the background. And In the process, make it a complete painting.  That's why the face of the figures are subdued.  Almost all of these images this year come from everyday people here in Chicago on their lunch breaks.
