  NYNY #18 is part of the series of paintings depicting NYC.  Although it may look like any deserted street, it's actually near Times Square.  But it happens to be an early Sunday Morning on a cold spring day.  I like to get out early before the streets get crowded with people and get simple abstract designs like this.

  Shovel and Drill for Blast is part of a series of paintings that I started a long time ago. I decided to go back to it after a few years.  The series focuses on mining or any type of hard labor job.  My grandfather was a coal miner in the Appalachia Mountains.  Which is what drew to this somewhat odd subject matter.

Reading #81

  Reading #81 is part of a series depicting the female figure reading.  I look for an interesting abstract pattern in these images.  I try to keep the factual information as secondary as possible.  Especially when portraying the female figure, I hope the painting isn't judged on how attractive the person is.

  Beach #30 is part of the series to do with figure, sand, and water.  I try to arrange different photo references together to make a narrative.  Two figures stare out into the water while the foreground figure reaches into her bag. I try to make viewers guess as to what has just happened.

Reading #57 (Large)

Reading #57 (Large) is a larger work (24 x 30 inches) of a successful smaller work.  I complete between 250 to 300 small paintings (12 x 16 inches) per year.  When I paint the larger piece I use the smaller work as a reference.  The process goes from a photograph to a small work, from a small work to the larger work.  The idea is to try and get away from the photo reference and use more instinct when painting.

  Reading #80 is part of a series that focuses on the female figure reading.  The figure in this painting was doing some reading during her lunch break.  Although you can't tell by this image, the park is crowded with people assembling during their break.

 NYNY #17 is part of a series of paintings depicting the scenes of NYC.  This is Times Square on an early Sunday morning before it becomes crowded.  The light blue reflection on the taxi window pops out of the dark shadows to balance the small dark figures walking across the street.
