  Cityscape #29 is part of a series depicting the big city.  This Chicago cityscape takes place on West Adams Street in late afternoon.  The setting sun creates these long diagonal shadows that stretch across the street.  The bus on the right is about to embark on a journey deep inside the shadows.

 Reader #51 is part of a series depicting the female figure reading. This scene comes from Millenium Park during a lunch break.  After eating their lunch, some people spend their remaining time reading.  Reading provides a brief escape from reality, something that electronic devices can't do.  The area around the figure is very active, contrasting the calm and still figure.

Trains and Buildings depicts the Chicago skyline and the train system.  I've seen many of Hopper's paintings illustrating the cityscape.  I've tried to capture both the excitement and mystery of entering the big city, as Hopper did.  The long diagonal of the train contrasts against the many verticals of the buildings.

  Girl with a Violin is actually a college student outside the art institute of Chicago playing the violin for tips.  During the summer there are many street performers in Chicago and often times they are college students.  The design of this painting consists of small lights coming out of large dark areas and vice versa.
