Reader #34

I start all paintings with an under painting.  I usually paint the large shapes  with a dark brown.  But on this particular painting I decided to use a blue-green.  The entire painting has a blue feel to it.

Cityscape #15

I took the photo reference for this painting at my doctor's office.  The painting is divided up into three horizontal stripes.  The middle stripe is the most active with smaller shapes and contrast.

Citycsape #14

The figure in this painting sets in a large open field.  The large "white" space forces the viewer to focus on the small figure.  The trees and buildings in the background offset the open field.

Two People #2

This painting was assembled from two different photo references.  The figure on the right is designated as the main character.  Characters are assigned roles just as in a movie.

Reader #8 (Large)

This is a larger painting (24 x 30) done from a previous smaller piece.  The photo reference was taken 6 years ago.   I don't hire models.  I look to capture normal people.  This lady happened to be reading a book during a lunch break outside the Museum of Modern Art in NYC.

Memphis #1

Last spring I took a trip to Memphis for the first time.  Great place with a lot of history.  This painting is the first of a series I plan to do on the city.

I worked in watercolor for a good 15 years before I started with oils.  I can see some of the similarities in the finished works.  For example, this painting looks like it could've been done in watercolor.
