Two people #8

Two People #8 is part of a series that depicts the interaction between two people.  The topic of conversation becomes the subject of the painting.  Hopefully, it engages the viewer and forces them come up with their own conclusions.

Coming and Going #53

Coming and Going #53 are people walking to and from their lunch break in the rain.  It's a scene from downtown Chicago in the summer.  The weather can change in a second.  On this particular day it was sunny.  And in a matter of few minutes, it was a downpour.

Cityscape #23

Cityscape #23 is a scene from downtown Chicago facing the sun around late afternoon.  The shadows create a composition full of diagonals, verticals, and horizontals.  By leaving out the details it enables these geometric composition to show through.

Reader #47

Reader #47 is a student reading her textbook right before class.  Scene comes from downtown early afternoon.  The three horizontal diagonals come in and stop at the figure, a tall vertical.  The two-dimensional design of a painting is the most important.

Coming and Going #51

Coming and Going #51 is a depiction of an intersection in downtown Chicago during noon lunch hour.  The people are coming and going from lunch back to work.  I intentionally left out a great deal of detail to capture the hectic pace.

Early Sunday Morning #5

I titled this series Early Sunday Morning after the well-known Edward Hopper painting.  The idea was to do paintings based on how the city looked early in the morning before the people and traffic took over.   The city has a different look and feel at this time.

Reader #46

Reader #46 is part of a series depicting  the female figure reading.  I find most of my subjects downtown during their lunch break.  There are four or five locations where people gather to eat their lunch outside during work.   After eating, some will pass the remaining time by reading a book.

Wabash #4

Wabash #4 is part of series that depicts the street scene on Wabash Avenue here in Chicago.  A large section of the street is covered with the overhead el tracks.  Also, I try  to keep the energy and hustle bustle of the scene by leaving out the details.

Railroad #1

Railroad #1 depicts the railroad tracks under the bridge on Roosevelt Road here in Chicago.  I've done a few railroad scenes maybe three or four altogether this year.  The long diagonals of the tracks contrast with the vertical shape of the buildings and makes a good design.

Reader #45

I continually try to find a way to make all my paintings look loose and fresh.  And in the meantime, if I can make the process go faster, even better.  This particular painting is a student who goes to college downtown.  She is catching up on her reading before she went to class.
