Two People #5 depicts two people at the beach.  In this case the figures aren't saturated with sunlight but in shadow.  Their bodies create a silhouette against the light colored sand.  This also has a Hopper feel with the two figures but both looking in different directions.

Cityscape #17 is an example of dramatic back lighting on the figures and objects.  This makes it very easy to breakdown the shapes into lights or dark.  I think it's one of the best ways to do a cityscape because the scene is already simplified for you.

Reader #36

Reader #36 is taken from a photograph across the street from the Willis (Sears) Towers.  The lights are very active and the darks calm.  I've been studying the works of the Bay Area Figurative Painters, Richard Diebenkorn in particular.  I try to keep the background very flat and two-dimensional to slow things down.  A characteristic that can be seen in his figurative work.

Sometimes I get away from doing the figure by trying my hand at landscapes.  I try to breakdown and simplify the shapes.  This is why the paintings can look almost abstract.

The bottom painting is a larger work (24 x 30) done from the smaller work on top (12 x 16).  I didn't deviate much from the smaller work.  I also kept the same color scheme.  The only difference is the details are a little tighter.  I try to keep the looseness and freshness from the smaller works without getting bogged down in details.

Two People #3

This painting comes a series depicting two people in conversation.  This particular conversation happens to be near the pool.  The male figure is the most dominant while the female figure is in a supporting role.  What are they talking about ?  That's the subject.

This is one of my first cityscapes in the rain.  I try to simplify all these complex shapes into three groups, large, medium, and small.  The bus and street below it makes up the largest shape.

This is a larger work (24 x 30) based on a smaller painting I had done earlier.  This particular work is done on birch wood.  I alternate between wood panel and linen.  Each surface gives a little different feel.

I start all paintings with an under painting.  I usually paint the large shapes  with a dark brown.  But on this particular painting I decided to use a blue-green.  The entire painting has a blue feel to it.

This is a larger painting (24 x 30) done from a previous smaller piece.  The photo reference was taken 6 years ago.   I don't hire models.  I look to capture normal people.  This lady happened to be reading a book during a lunch break outside the Museum of Modern Art in NYC.
