Near the Window

Near the Window is another in the series of the female figure reading.  I've spent countless hours studying the works of Richard Diebenkorn and how he arranged his works.  This painting reflects his influence more than other works I've done.

Reading Glasses

Reading Glasses is part of a series focusing on the female figure reading.  I've been doing paintings for this series since about 2009.  But I always try to keep it moving in a direction to keep from getting stale.  For example, in this painting, the color is made up from my imagination rather than copying nature.

Lawn Chair in Shade

Lawn Chair in Shade is part of a series to do with the female figure reading in various poses and situations.  In this case, relaxing in a lawn chair with half the figure in shadow.  I try to down play the figure's face as much as possible.  I don't want it to be the center of attention.

Wide Expanse

Wide Expanse is part of a series to do with beach scenes.  The summer was unusually cold and rainy in Chicago.  The crowded, masses of people on the beach wasn't there. In fact, it was a very sparse crowd.

Wok of Fire

Wok of Fire is part of a new series to do with dining and or restaurants.  These cooks are preparing food with flames roaring from the pan.  The chaotic and organic shape of the flames contrast with the sharp edges of the apron and hand.

Lime Green

Lime Green is part of a new series I started this year.  This series has to do with people eating and conversing during lunch.  I couldn't help but listen, as I walk around with my camera, the conversations people are having during lunch.  Lunch seems to be the only time during the day that people get to let out their feelings and ideas.

Melancholy

Melancholy is another in the series of the female figure reading.  I try to convey the idea of chaos around the figure who is absorbed in their reading.  This figure is reading while riding the subway in NYC.

Captivated in Transit

Captivated in Transit is part of an ongoing series depicting the female figure reading.  This figure is completely absorbed in her reading while riding public transportation.  The ability to convey her moods convincingly comes from twenty years of drawing editorial illustrations.

Midtown Blue and Yellow

Midtown Blue and Yellow is part of a series of urban landscape paintings.  This street is near Midtown in NYC around noon.  The figure combines with the buildings to make a vertical that cuts through the painting.  This vertical contrasts with the horizontal lines of cars and signs.
