Three Figures on the Beach

Three Figures on the Beach is part of a series of works.  These figures were on Lake Michigan here in Chicago two summers ago.  The two figures on the left are lowering their bodies while the lone figure is raising up from the beach chair.  The idea is to show two contrasting ideas at once which share the same space.

Figure Reading with Green and Purple

Figure Reading with Green and Purple is part of a series that feature the female figure reading.  This figure was caught reading at Grant Park in Chicago.  My guess is she was a student from a nearby college.  The background is broken into two contrasting colors, yellow-green and blue-purple, to bring a color contrast to an empty area of the painting.

Female Figure Reading in Shade

Female Figure Reading in Shade is part of a series illustrating the female figure reading in various positions and settings.  This setting is around the Art Institute of Chicago.  They have a small grassy area where many people go during their lunch break to read and relax.  I've been studying many of the San Fransisco Bay area artist, like Elmer Bischoff, for the past year.  This dream like scene proves that his images have crept into my head.

Female Figure Checking Purse in Crosswalk

Female Figure Checking Purse in Crosswalk is part of an ongoing series depicting the human figure in motion.  Most of the time these paintings show the figures in crosswalks of busy metropolitan city streets.  Always trying to push the energy and looseness in these paintings, this one takes it a step farther.

Figure with Backpack Crossing Broadway in NYC

Figure with Backpack Crossing Broadway in NYC is part of a series of works depicting the human figure crossing the street in an urban setting.  I decided to make my titles the descriptive words of the scene.  For example, this scene is a figure with backpack crossing Broadway in NYC.  These new works are also done on linen rather than panel, giving a different, looser, look.

Cityscape #50

Cityscape #50 is part of a series of streetscapes.  These buildings are somewhere along Seventh Avenue and Thirty-Fifth Street in Manhattan last spring.  The streets are empty at this time because it was early on a Sunday morning.  In this painting I'm trying a lighter palette and looser brushwork.  Executing these paintings on linen rather than panel give it a very different look.

Coming and Going #71

Coming and Going #71 is part of a series illustrating the human figure in motion.  In most of these paintings the figures are crossing the street in urban setting.  I started executing these works on linen instead of hardboard panel.  I've also injected more color at a higher value range.  I'm always looking to add more spontaneity to my work.
