Reader #27

I try to make center of focus as obvious as possible.  For example, in this painting it would be the white shape in the middle of her shirt.  Therefore, I played down the details surrounding that shape.

Cityscape #11

In all my paintings I am trying to simplifying things. I try to break the image down into 3 areas. One area is lite, one is dark, and one area has the small details.

Hand Mining #2

Occasionally I like to do something different.  This painting is part of a series I do on labor.  I research archive photos whenever I can to find good material.

Early Sunday Morning #3

This painting was done almost a year ago but I never posted it online.  It has sat in my basement for about a year until now.  I did a few of these type of paintings based on photographs taken on an early Easter Sunday morning.

Large painting from smaller work

The top image is a larger work (24 x 30) done from the successful smaller (12 x 16) work.  I try to keep the same energy and looseness in the larger work that I had in the smaller one.  The larger format allows for more detail especially in the figures.

Lipstick

I like photographing people in subways.  The private act of putting on lipstick in a public place, like a subway, is a very interesting contrast.

Beach No.9

The main character seems to stare at something which is out of the picture plane.  It makes the viewer wonder what he could be staring at.  And the large blue sky gives this painting a narrative feel.

Coming and Going #46

In this series of people coming and going I like to make the people look somewhat transparent.  I want to make the figure and background as one plane.  The two figure on the far left are an example of this.
